Stories of Africans Living in Newham – Volunteering Opportunity

IROKO Theatre Company is seeking to recruit two volunteer researchers to assist with our ‘Stories of Africans Living in Newham’ project. The project is part of Newham Heritage Month 2021, themed ‘Shops, Docks and Factories – Newham’s Urban Heritage’. Supported by Newham Heritage Month Fund through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will research, record, preserve, celebrate and share the stories of Africans who have helped or are helping to shape the economic and urban heritage of Newham, through an original musical theatre performance and e-records.

Do you have oral history research skills, an interest in East London’s African diaspora and a passion for community heritage? Do you have availability to work with us from late February to early April? If so, we would love your help in collating personal stories through online oral history interviews and contextual research, under the supervision of our Artistic Director.

To apply, please send us your CV and a short cover letter to heritage@irokotheatre.org.uk, telling us what you could bring to the project and why you would like to be involved. Residents of Newham, especially those with African heritage, are strongly encouraged.

Deadline: 14th February
Informal interviews will take place via Zoom on 15th/16th February
Successful applicants will be encouraged to attend ‘Introduction to the Archive’ training on 18th February.
